It’s hard to believe how quickly 2016 is already moving, let alone the school year. With the summer fast approaching, some of us will be in search of our first real-world experience: AN INTERNSHIP.
Internships are a great way to gain hands on experience prior to graduation and can also help you navigate your way to your professional development. Here is your survival kit to your internship: from landing the job to performing like a rockstar, SPC has you covered.
The Search
There is no surprise that any type of job searching can be difficult, and looking for internships is no exception. Start by making a list of dream companies you already know of. Then, add to that list by researching various companies that fall in the field you are looking to work in. Don’t be afraid to make a LinkedIn account and search career opportunities on job search engines including Indeed, Talent Egg and Job Postings! Don’t be afraid to use on campus resources such as making an appointment with your Academic Advisor, and attending job fairs in between classes!
The Application Process
Now that you have your list, it’s time to start applying. Even if there is no direct job posting for internships, you are doing no harm by sending the company a quick e-mail, asking if they take on interns. It’s a great way to network, and remember, if they don’t have your resume then they can’t call you!
The Interview
After searching, talking, reading and applying you finally received a surprise in your inbox this morning: an invite to an interview! You are one step closer, but not quite there yet. Be prepared to dress professionally, practice potential questions and answers, and in some cases bring a portfolio (trust us, you will be more memorable that way!)
The job
Congratulations! You received the job offer. Now, reality begins! Be prepared to go in with a positive attitude ready to take on any challenge that comes your way. Be open to all projects, ask questions, and be friendly! Even though your internship may be short-term, you are still going to be spending a lot of time in your new workplace, so do your best to make it enjoyable from every angle.
Afterwards
After your internship is complete, don’t forget about your time well spent! At this point, you will have already completed a number of daily tasks and will certainly have something great to update in your LinkedIn profile. Connect with all your colleagues, acquaintances, and clients and don’t be afraid to inquire about future job opportunities.
The competition will be high, but who says you can’t be number one?
