I can’t rap at all. Like AT ALL. But I’ll tell you who can, Patricia Dombrowski aka Killa P, aka Patti Cake$. After hearing good things about the Patti Cake$ and its accolades at different festivals (specifically Sundance) I was still skeptical after not seeing much promotion for it. I was pleasantly surprised, this movie was fun and fresh with just the right touch of sass.

Patricia Dombrowski, aka Killa P (played by Danielle Macdonald), starts the movie off as a girl going through some tough times, with a dream in her notebook. She has a mom that can’t let go of her days in a Classic Rock band and bills that are piling up on her family. With the help of her friend Hareesh, aka Jheri (played by Siddharth Dhananjay), a pharmacist by day and rap sidekick by night, P is able to write rap and practice her music all while still on the hunt for her big break.

The relationship between P and Jheri is perfect chemistry for a pair of best friends looking to make it in music. She calls him her ‘Jheromeo’ and he does nothing but remind her constantly of how amazing she is and how one day someone will take notice.

At the heart of the movie is the message to pursue your dreams no matter how hard life might get. The reality is that if you work hard, good things will happen for you and that’s the mentality Patti has through this inspiring story.

Patti Cake$ is in select theatres beginning TOMORROW, August 25. Check your local listings!
