I’m not over exaggerating, The Big Sick is one of the best movies (especially rom com) I’ve watched in a very long time. If you’re looking for something that will make you cry, laugh, and get that warm feeling in your heart, this is the movie for you.
The film tells the story of Kumail, a young comedian trying to find his identity as a Pakistani immigrant in America. While trying to manage his parents attempts at an arranged marriage, he falls in love with and American girl named Emily. After dating for several months, Emily develops a lung infection and is put into an induced coma. This leads Kumail to meet her parents, and spend time getting to know them while doctors try to treat Emily.
Eventually Emily’s condition is diagnosed and she is taken out of the coma…and from there the story evolves even more. See how I didn’t just give away the rest of the movie?
I’m all for giving out spoilers, but when it comes to this movie you really just have to see it yourself and get lost in Kumail and Emily’s story. I will say, it’s refreshing to watch a rom com that feels authentic and relatable, it’s not cheesy or over-the-top – it’s exactly what we needed. Not to mention, it’s based on a true story (knowing this might actually make you cry a little more), so the connection with the characters is even stronger.
