For many of us, graduation is a very bitter-sweet experience. We’re excited about the next stage of our lives, but we’re sad to leave behind an environment we’ve grown so comfortable with. I’ll never forget the tears streaming down my classmates faces as we walked into the gymnasium wearing our gowns and caps.
My friends and I, on the other hand, couldn’t have possibly had a wider smile. Here’s why you should too:
1. The important people aren’t going anywhere
The people that had the biggest role in your life aren’t going to disappear just because you’ve all graduated. Your true friends will always be by your side, and you will make the effort to keep in touch. I actually became closer with people from my high school AFTER we all graduated. Even if your friend is going to a different university, your friendship won’t be crushed!
2. You have no idea what the future holds
So…this might sound scary, but it’s actually really really exciting! There are so many new opportunities waiting for you, and you have no idea what they could be. You don’t know what’s out there until you’re out there. You have to be open to it, and take every experience as it comes.
3. You’re one step closer to #adulting
Once again, this sounds scary…and in complete honesty it is scary. BUT it’s a good kind of scary. I don’t know how to explain it, but there’s a great feeling that comes with no longer tell people you’re in high school. It’s almost like a feeling of maturity and validation? That sounds weird. Being an adult is really cool (despite what all the memes say), you make your own decisions and you’re responsible for yourself!
4. Hi new friends!
Just because you have great friends from high school doesn’t mean you can’t make more! There’s no limit to the amount of amazing people you can have in your life. For those of you who didn’t necessarily click with your classmates in high school, this is your opportunity to get out there and meet your people.
5. You’re one step closer to finishing school
Finishing high school means you’re almost done with going to school all together. Let’s face it, school isn’t really anyone’s favourite thing and just the thought of being done with it is enough to make us smile. If you choose to continue with post-secondary education, you’re basically one graduation away from saying goodbye to lectures and professors! If you’re not continuing onto post-secondary, graduation is your final goodbye to school. That’s pretty exciting.
Feeling better about graduating now? Just remember that when one door closes, another one opens, this is a new chapter in your life, and any other cheesy phrase you’ve ever heard about new beginnings 🙂 No but seriously, this next phase of your life will be amazing and high school will just be another great memory.
